When contacted by a debt collector the most important thing to remember is that you must not ignore a collection notice or, worse, notice of a lawsuit.
Be sure to double check the statute of limitations which applies to your debt. If the statute has “run” your debt may not be ‘claimable’ by the debt buyer.
However, if you decide to pay some portion of that debt you will likely renew the entire unpaid debt.

Consumers need be well aware of the sometimes-bogus lawsuits filed by junk debt buyers. These entities routinely file hundreds of lawsuits hoping that a vast number of the defendants will not show up at court. Take heed. There are very strong defenses for you. Contact a consumer advocate knowledgeable in this area of the law. Do not avoid the debt collectors; ignoring the debt collector will not make the debt go away. More importantly do not ignore debt collection notices.
After your first contact from the debt buyer, demand that the alleged debt be validated. If you are being harassed by a debt collector, keep accurate notes with which to build a case. Offensive debt collectors fall under the regulation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act(FDCPA). Under the FDCPA, collectors are prohibited from such actions as failing to cease communication upon request, causing your telephone to ring continuously with the intention of annoying, contacting a consumer known to be represented by an attorney or threatening arrest or legal action which is not truly contemplated or which is not permissible. Don’t be abused. Check with an attorney in Oklahoma that is experienced in defending consumers against debt collectors.

The following is a list of Debt Buyerswho regularly sue consumers in Oklahoma. If you are contacted by any of these companies you should contact an Oklahoma attorney experienced with this kind of debt collector.
